What Pants should I wear with a Black Suit Jacket?

Recently, a reader asked us what type of pants to wear with his Calvin Klein Black Suit Jacket. He was missing the matching pants and was looking for a quick fix. While we do recommend Beige Suits (like this Sean John Beige 2 Piece)  for most weddings, we did find a solution for this scenario!
Here is what we said:

That’s always an interesting challenge! You’ll want to avoid trying to match blacks as there’s a better chance of being hit by lightening. There are just too many shades of black.

You’re lucky though. Black is the universal donor of suits and you have a few options for a wedding.

I’d try a pair of flat charcoal or gray dress pants.

Here are some possible combinations:

Very slick: Charcoal pants / Charcoal pinstripe shirt / Thin black tie / Black blazer / Black belt / Black shoes

Very slick – option 2: Gray pants / Gray checkered shirt / Thin black tie / Black blazer / Black belt / Black shoes

Colorful: Charcoal pants / Matte purple shirt / Purple patterned tie / Black blazer / Black belt / Black shoes

Colorful – option 2: Charcoal pants / Deep blue shirt / Light blue patterned tie / Black blazer / Black belt / Black shoes

Bottom line: Go with charcoal or dark gray pants and you’ve got no worries. Skinny black tie would be the killer touch.

What can a tailor really do?

Many people ask us about tailors after they buy a suit from SuitUpp. We figured it would be a good idea to talk more about tailors since they seem to be such a hot topic. Tailors are great. Whenever you’re buying a suit, depending on who the suit salesperson is, they’ll tell you that tailors are these magical creatures that can take almost any suit and make it work for you. The reality is that, the story doesn’t involve as much fairy dust as you would think.

The fit of the shoulders is probably the most important part of the suit. If the shoulders don’t fit properly, chances are that the tailor will not be able to do much for you. If the salesperson tells you that they can reduce or reshape the shoulder pad size, ignore what they say 🙂

As for the pants, if they are an inch or two inches too tight or too big, don’t worry about it. This easily falls into the realm of possibility for the tailor to handle. Anything beyond that, though, could be difficult.

When it comes to your jacket, you can ask your tailor to make sure that about 1/4 inch of your cuffs show. Some people like to show more cuff, more then 1/4 inch, so that the cuff links or watch becomes visible and adds to the style. As long as your sleeves do not look like they are short and you incorporate the above it can look pretty sharp. You’ll likely need the tailor to taper the sides of your jacket so that it fits your torso well. If you pay attention to your collar, you’ll also notice that there is usually a roll in the back of the suit jacket. This can also be fixed when you have your suit fitted.

If you’re looking for a recommendation on who would be a good tailor in your neighborhood, please feel free to send Marco a message: marco@suitupp.com.

What type of shirt collar should I wear?

Recently Jake Bradshaw from Wisconsin asked us to talk about the different types of shirt collars there are out there and how he should make his choice of a collar. The basic answer to this is that your choice of collar will depend on the type of tie you are wearing (the width) and also how dressy you want to look. Let’s start out by showing you the three most common collar types that are out there (pictures courtesy of GQ Magazine):

The Button-Down Collar

This type of a collar works best with medium width ties and shirts that are cut from broadcloth (dense woolen cloth) rather than oxford cloth. Very American. This is generally not a very dressy collar and is not the best choice for a business suit. This type of collar is more American in style than anything else. It is a good choice if you are walking around in the office without a jacket on or if you are going for a more casual look.

The Straight-Point Collar

This type of a collar is great for more skinny looking ties. The collar’s narrow positioning makes it a good fit for very high cut 3+ button suit jackets but also looks good with 2 or 1 button ones . Always a safe choice.

The Spread Collar

Our personal favorite, the spread collar. A very European look. The collar exudes confidence. It’s a great fit for medium-to-wide ties and begs for a four-in-hand knot. Despite what some may say, its fine for a bit of the tie to show around the collar. In general, it is best to keep a tighter tie knot with this type of collar 🙂
